Developing skillsets and capabilities during your career is too important to be left to chance. After all, build it and they will come isn’t a strategy, it’s an accident. Skills must be planned, the education methodical, capabilities added in the right order, with the next layered upon the previous. In my case, the foundation was a formal education in finance and real estate finance. Learning the money first was key.

Next was probably most important, learning attention to detail from progressively higher end custom homes. The eye for details was required from the start, because quality comes before production. I compromise neither.

During the last twenty years, I built thousands of custom homes, urban townhomes, luxury condominiums, multifamily projects, senior living and active adult projects, niche retirement communities. I also developed many of the communities and building lots in which many are built.

The residential construction type with which I had the least experience was production homebuilding. Acquiring the specialized experience to be an expert in production building began at DSW Homes in early 2021 where ‘do it now‘ is the company mantra. Before leaving, I had 352 active jobs, in 66 different permitting jurisdictions in my pipeline.

Taking over a small Build-To-Rent company, increasing production 560%, gave me monster production building skills, and left me universally accepted as a very capable production builder. Two years later, I was running the #1 largest Build-to-Rent operation and the #4 largest homebuilder in Memphis.
